i've been thinking of berryman this morning, of how we've gone from there to where we are now. ginsberg wrote, "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness," and its easy to see the wake of destruction in the period around him, the suicides hanging on the literary tree: berryman, randall, schwartz, plath. what would we say today? "destroyed by madness"? no. hardly. what then? what will suffice?
