La parola da casa, Serena Piccoli

Régis Bonvicino, one of Brazil's great poets, has written an interesting article about the poetry of the Americas. He argues for the impossibility of a pan-American poetry. In a note to the article, he mentions Whitman's influence on Spanish-speaking America and the need for a work on it. Actually, that was partially the topic of my dissertation several years ago. I looked primarily at how Neruda patterned Canto general on Leaves of Grass, but I also included poets like Rubén Darío and José Martí in the study. I agree with Bonvicino that a pan-American poetry does not exist now, but I hope as the United States weakens and Brazil grows strengthens that more crossover will happen between the literary cultures of the nations.
