According to Paz, Mexican fiestas can be wild moments of freedom in which the usual hierarchies are torn down. Last night here in Chicago, a three-story wooden porch collapsed under the weight of 80 partying people. Literally the structures that held them up gave way in the midst of their fiesta, sending twelve of them into that final freedom.
