ok, a real translation for once:

all
perishes
--Alcaeus

this is a fragment which was probably part of two separate lines in some original poem now lost—there are even pieces (letters and a preposition) between them, but it makes sense as it is; plus, i am not adding on the rest of the lines like some translators (i won't name anyone here) do. all we have are these words and some more after them from a papyrus scrap. i could have translated the poem as:

all men far from home loose their hearts, and the heart
perishes like vines in a desert when not attended to.

but somehow that sounds like crap and the simple "all / perishes" makes more sense to me.
