a day or two ago, i received matt hart's book Who's Who Vivid from slope editions. when i opened the package, i hesitated a little, for i remember hearing matt hart read a few months ago at myopic books here in chicago. his reading did not inspire much in me, but i like his book, and that is ultimately the important part (i don't think i would have liked randall jarrell as much as i do if i had only heard him read). his language flows along quickly with an everyday feel, but everyday thrown under a new colored light. many of the poems in this work seem to be about a person searching for something by shedding what he knows. they remind me a little of montale's poem "Non chiederci la parola" ("Don't ask me for the word"). anyway, it's a book with a lot of interesting ideas that hit you sideways.
