i watched charles bernstein read last sunday in a converted church, and i remembered years ago watching him read in new orleans in another converted church. he was humorous and fun to listen to, but ever since the reading, i’ve been thinking about the use of humor in poetry and the allure of getting caught up in it because of audience reaction. looking back through poetry that influences me, i can think of only a handful of humorous writers, like cecco or villon, who stick with me. is that a commentary on me or on humorous poetry?
