antonia pozzi

i have spent part of the day reading pozzi's work. i had never heard of her before this afternoon when i stumbled upon lawrence venuti's translation (along with the original) of her work in 57th street books. interesting work. her poems remind me of ungaretti's, h.d.'s, and niedecker's work all thrown together. plus, a few poems from near the end of the translation that touch upon contemporary experience (just before wwii in italia) remind me of akhmatova's work concerning the purge.

according to venuti in his introduction, montale wrote a piece on pozzi. if it is filled with montale's usual brillance, i'll have to find it.
