the geometry of thought is not conscious
I practice forgetting all kinds of things
--John Tipton, from Surfaces

i finally had a chance to take a close look at john tipton’s Surfaces, a new poetry book put out by flood editions. incredible work. tipton’s ideas remind me of those in works by wittgenstein, quine, and davidson, but the language reminds me of susan howe’s work. tipton mentions daily activities or things, such as taxicabs or driving in oklahoma, but these mundane things appear to be pieces of a signifying web, or simply a game web. tipton’s poetry is thoughtful but controlled. everything seems perfectly in place, but the placement is in a language field aware that it is a language field. this books makes me look forward to seeing more of tipton’s work.
