Just received the new issue of _nearSouth_ (a Chicago journal edited by Garin Cycholl and others). Some nice work in it, like the pieces by Chris Stroffolino, Dale Smith, and Noah Eli Gordon. I especially like Dale Smith's "Sounding" for its nice lyric quality. For a relatively small magazine, _nearSouth_ has a nice range of work in it of drama, fiction, and poetry; plus, it has some interesting translations and takes from ancient works. For example, the take on Sappho in Devin Johnston's "After Sappho" transforms a fleet of battleships into a "sea harrier / in vertical ascent." On the whole, the work in it is high quality.
