The Daily Glance
Mónica de la Torre’s Public Domain seems like multiple books rolled in one. We have a “play” based on cutting bits of letters to the editor from The New York Times leading up to the Iraq War. We have a piece based on giving origin explanations to poems that then might or might not appear. We have a long piece based on an e-mail exchange between a woman searching for a potential mother named Mónica de la Torre and responses from many Mónicas and others trying to help the person find the Mónica. That piece is actually quite fascinating. I’m not sure that I would call it poetry. It seems more like a fiction piece, but the genre doesn’t matter. The other poem that most interests me is one in which multiple languages are layered atop of one another so that the piece becomes unreadable at times but very clear at other times.
