The Daily Glance

Brenda Cárdenas's boomerang is a book filled with immigrant issues, sex, politics, and memory. A few of the poems are in Spanish, and Spanish is sprinkled throughout the book. The political push in the poems feels similar to that in many Latin American writers (and which is often absent in Anglo writing). Some of my favorite pieces were simple memory poems, such as "Lecciones de lengua," a poem told from a girl's perspective of her father coming to school to teach the children Spanish. It's clear and touching. Poems like "Carne y hueso/Flesh and Bone" remind me a little of Neruda's poems after Spain: "Preguntaréis: Y dónde están las lilas?"
