The Daily Glance

Luis Humberto Valadez's what i'm on melds contemporary poetry (as taught by academia) with hip-hop/street language. Valadez seems comfortable with both, a thing that is not typical for younger poets especially. The poems seem mostly about his life growing up in Chicago Heights, getting mugged, raped, and just living. Interestingly, he often mentions Dharma and Christianity in the book blending the traditions, commenting on ideas from both. On the whole, it seems like he's trying to given us some insight into his experience to shake us from our narrow glimpses of life in the U.S.
