A Daily Glance
Brian Clements' Disappointed Psalms is a war book of someone who has lost faith. The speaker laments about the atrocities of the current war while calling on the Lord, but then the speaker ultimately seems to give up on the Lord in favor of language. Through writing, through stating what has happened, the speaker can hope for at least memory if not change.
I have had this book since it came out in 2008 and have read it many, many times. I originally thought that it would age quickly when Bush was out of power, but I no longer think that is the case. It strikes me as Denise Levertov's poems about the war do. Some dismiss them as propaganda, but I like their focus on actual events, and I feel the same about these pieces from Clements.
