A Daily Glance

Marie Buck's Life & Style is playful. Full of satire and irony, these poems come at us like clips from magazines/tv/the Internet/radio. They are remarkably straight-forward but unsettling at the same time. It feels like Buck is confronting us with the language that we use most frequently, and in so doing, she is showing us how empty it looks. Through her critique, there are side critiques, such as a critique of the gender construction in the U.S. Ultimately, it exciting to see a critique that does not take itself too seriously. Buck doesn't just aim at us and claim the high ground. Language, even hers, is commodified and celebritized.
