A Daily Glance

Jen Hofer's Sin puertas visibles: An Anthology of Contemporary Poetry by Mexican Women is an excellent introduction to Mexican poetry and to translation. Hofer includes a brief article on translation in general which functions as the preface, and the article is full of insight into translation, on the way in which one encounters the other and is othered through translation. The anthology also includes many Mexican poets I had not heard of before, and I'm very glad to read these brief selections of their work. Better yet, this is not a collection of standard practices in poetry. These poets play with poetry, with its forms and the way it can mean. All eleven poets are interesting, and several of them leave me wanting to read much more.
