A Daily Glance

Lisa Gill's Red as a Lotus: Letters to a Dead Trappist is a response of sorts to Merton's Seeds of Contemplation. Gill's book is written in contemporary sonnets, and the poems are pitched as letters written to Merton. They are contemplative and daily. The speaker mentions her poverty, the trailer she is living in, and mundane activities such as fixing a fence. It's in these activities that the speaker experiences her own spiritual journey. The speaker is humble yet comfortable in her search. Gill manages to express herself in clear and flowing language, and this book seems like it would be best savored slowly as it was written in a daily meditation.
