The Daily Glance

Grzegorz Wróblewski's A Marzipan Factory was translated from Polish by Adam Zdrodowski. Wróblewski's poems consist primarily of short lyrics which deal with things like sex, death, and life now. Many of them are straight forward, but some of them show the influence of writers like Kafka and movements like Dada with odd almost surreal shifts in the thought trails. Beyond that, some of the poems read like complicated little puzzles in which one must figure out what goes with what. I found several pieces that stood out to me of both straight lyric and surreal/Dada/Kafka influenced poems.
You talk to me too much about angels
After all, we are still
here

Among the black worms
and colourful butterflies:
The idea here is simple, as is Wróblewski's expression of it, and that's what makes the poem work here. It is not overdone. Wróblewski is good at the simple expression and ironic.
Our birds are already circling someone else.
You're right, we pay too high taxes,
and the sky has unexpectedly lost depth.
The birds quickly figured out...
