The Daily Glance

Jill Stengel's Late May is an aesthetically beautiful chapbook.  Before reading it, I flipped through to look at the colors and patterns.  Essentially, this chapbook has poems written on colorful backgrounds--backgrounds that look like wallpaper.  The words are not arranged in any special way on the paper, or at least not apparently so, for they look like standard open verse forms.  The poems themselves deal with daily events, from being a parent to being pregnant to seeing Orcas Island to dealing with isolation.  My favorite one, the first, begins this way.
in search of exquisite, find
instead adequate, tolerable, effective,
efficient, just plan good enough

think about that, apply it, witness
the outcome
There is insight in the simple nature of these pieces, and the chapbook is one that I just want to hold and admire.
